I would like your meaning of this poem
I built a bridge
Out of nowhere accross nothingness
and i wondered if there would be something
on the other side.
I built a bridge
out of fog accross darkness
and hoped there would be light on
the other side.
I built a bridge
out of despair accross oblivian
I knew there would be hope
on the other side.
I built a bridge
out of helplessness accross chaos
and trusted that there would be
strenght on the other side.
I built a bridge
out of hell accross terror
and it was a good bridge,
a strong bridge,
a beautiful bridge.
I built it myself
with only my hands for tools
my obstinancy for supports
my faith for spans and my
blood for rivets.
I built a bridge and crossed it
But there was no one to meet me
on the other side.
Your thoughts on this, I found this in one of my old bibles

Wow.
On one reading, it could be a despairing poem about the futility and meaninglessness of life - if you believe this life is all there is.
It could also be a cynical poem by an unbeliever describing the life of a believer - as the unbeliever sees it - all that work toward some non-existent goal.
Perhaps it could be a critique, by a believer, of any attempt to build a meaning or pathway in life only by our own power or in solitude or without God's help.
Thanks Jeff and Scott. I have some thoughts on this but will wait and see if anyone else responds. I don't get many comments but just maybe someone else will respond. If not its not that important, i was just curious and can't remember where i got this.
To me, the significance is on the concept of "I." The writer talks about how he or she did all of this alone and once the task is accomplished he or she is still alone. It brings to mind the line from Donne's poem "No man is an island." If the author had received help from anyone, either physical or spiritual, he would not have been alone on the other side. There would have been satisfaction in a job finished rather than disappointment in the fact the bridge led to no one else.
I don't mean this to sound like an English class, but the wonderful thing about poetry is that it can say something different to everyone. We all bring our own experiences into a work and that causes us to interpret meaning differently. That is the wonderful thing about literary analysis. There is no right or wrong meaning if you can use the text to support what you take from the work.
To me this poem means that we should never give up,keep building bridges to anywhere, to everywhere, to nowhere, even if there is no one to meet us on the other side we should still strive to get there. The other side may refer to when we die but it could also mean the other side of anything that we attempt in this life.
